Helping hand for Dorothea awards

Mackellarawards

The Dorothea Mackellar Memorial Society has once again thanked Whitehaven Coal for their donation towards the Dorothea Mackellar Poetry Awards.

This is the seventh year Whitehaven Coal has been a supporter of the awards, this year handing over $5000.

Dorothea Mackellar Poetry Awards project officer Mila Stone said the money would be used on a range of projects including the website.

She said Whitehaven’s support last year had meant poetry award winners were able to visit the former Mackellar property of Kurrumbede.

Dorothea Mackellar Memorial Society president Jenny Farquhar said the donation was very gratefully received.

The Dorothea Mackellar Poetry Awards were launched in Canberra on March 1.

Organisers are expecting entries from a record number of schools across the country in 2016.

Winners of the awards, which are the largest of their kind in the country, will be announced in Gunnedah later this year.
