Whitehaven continues support of Gomeroi Roos

Whitehaven Coal has continued its support of some of the north west NSW region’s promising rugby league stars.

The Gomeroi Roos recently travelled to Sydney to take part in the NSW Aboriginal Rugby League Knock Out – with the boys giving a creditable performance at the West Tigers home ground of Leichardt Oval.

It is the second year that Whitehaven, the leading employer in the north west NSW region, has sponsored the Gomeroi Roos.

While the team were not able to make it past the first round, there performance caught the eye of talent scouts – with Mullaley local Austin Grieg (pictured below) subsequently selected for the NSW Aboriginal Under 16’S train-on squad.

If successful following the trials, Austin will play in a curtain raiser prior to the next season’s NRL All Stars game in Newcastle.

Coaches Michael Long and Brian Draper said the team could be proud of their efforts in the Knock Out.

Michael Long said: “The boys played well and enjoyed the atmosphere of playing at such an iconic venue as Leichardt Oval. This is the second year we have played in the event and we are very thankful once again to Whitehaven Coal for the support.”

He said: “The news that Austin has gained selection to the NSW Aboriginal Under 16’s train on squad is fantastic news not only for the team but the region as a whole. His selection has inspired his team mates and we wish him all the best in his quest.”
